A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
