The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
