The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
